About the project
Grade II Listed Salisbury Crematorium was built in the 1960s in the ‘New Humanist’ style. In 2013, planning permission was granted to renew two cremators, install mercury abatement and emission-control equipment to ensure the site complies with EU regulations, expand the car park, and create an additional chapel space. RHB was asked to provide solutions for WC’s, heating, hot water, lighting, power, fire alarm, and various auxiliary services, including PA, CCTV, intruder, and Wesley music systems. As part of the project, the existing crematory plant had to be stripped out, and the new burners and Mercury abatement plant installed. The project was on-site for one year and was completed in January 2014.
Understanding the challenges
In heritage projects, our engineers face unique challenges due to evolving technologies, coordination issues, space constraints, and the need to adapt the design to accommodate restricted electrical supplies. The phasing for this project was also critical as the clients wanted to maintain use of the crematory plant during construction.
