Centenary Quay is the site of the former Vosper Thorneycroft shipyard, purchased by Crest Nicholson in 2008. RHB Partnership became involved in Phase 2 and is currently working on the design of Phase 6.
Phases 1 and 2 provide 336 homes, 162 of which are affordable. These early phases also included a new library and day nursery. Inaddition, they linked Woolston High Street to Centenary Quay, providing early amenities for the new community.
Phase 3 was completed in 2015 and comprised of 329 apartments, including shared ownership and ‘Build to Rent’ units, along with a Morrison’s superstore and retail and leisure units, which provide a new vibrant mixed-use commercial focus to the new community together with significant employment opportunities.
Phase 4 was a 27-story tower block with 170 units and a remote underground car park and has now been named Vantage Tower – the tallest building in Southampton.
RHB Partnership designed the phase 4 services, which consist of the following:
RHB coordinated the services with several specialist equipment designers for the plant rooms and ran through the risers and communal areas.
Crest Nicholson sold the building to a housing provider after the project commenced. The new owners required re-modelling the ground floor into offices, communal meeting areas, a gym, and a studio. RHB drew the plans in Revit so that the services could be coordinated early.
Our designs for the recently completed Phase 5 were similar to those for Phase 4, and we have just started the design of Phase 6, which will be the final one. This phase is slightly different from the previous ones as there is no connection to the district heating scheme. Instead, it’s an all-electric scheme with a dedicated heat pump for the hot water within the apartments. In addition, the designs include sprinklers, smoke ventilation with UPS backup, and an external car park.
Once completed, the regenerated former Vosper site will contain 1,620 dwellings.
