About the project

The conversion of a former Woolworths store into a Library and Information Centre. The existing building is located on a pedestrianised precinct in Southsea and is used for a community library with coffee shop and customer services facilities.

Understanding the challenges

The building was thermally updated (including replacement windows and insulated) and refurbished throughout the ground floor. The first and second floors have yet to have their final uses decided however facilities were put in place to extend the IT and electrical provision from the ground floor and also the necessary fire egress routes were installed within this project, to facilitate future use of these areas. The ground floor is predominately a library area with bookshelves and seating areas as well as a separate IT learning area, baby changing, toilets and café. Mechanical supply and extract systems were installed and heating and cooling are via air source heat pumps with fan coil units fixed to the slab serving linear grilles within plenums and suspended at the end of the rafts. All mechanical plant is located on the roof. The lighting within the reading areas is dimmable and controlled via presence detection and scene set controllers.
